A economia do Brasil sempre teve uma relação estreita com a extração mineral. Desde os tempos de colônia, o Brasil transformou a mineração, também responsável por parte da ocupação territorial, em um dos setores básicos da economia nacional. A mineração é responsável pela extração das matérias-primas que são utilizadas pelas indústrias, como metalúrgicas, siderúrgicas, fertilizantes, petroquímica, tratamento de água, construção civil, eletroeletrônica, aeronáutica, farmacêutica, papel, cosmética e muitas outras. O setor também é um dos grandes responsáveis pela interiorização do desenvolvimento.
